$faf Set-Up your Playstation and insert the Ridge Racer disk as described
in your Playstation manual. Turn on the power button.
There's a short loading break (in which you can play a brief game of
the arcade classic Galaxian) and then push START to bring up the menu
screen. Push start again to get straight to the grid.
Basic Controller Operation
Directions buttons - move around screen
Button {} or square - Cancel selection or return to the previous menu.
Button circle or X or start - Confirm selection.
Default Driving Controls
L/R Button - Shift Up/Down a gear.
Left/Right - Turn Left/Right.
Start - Pause Menu.
Square - Brake.
{} - Change View.
X - Accelerate.
Negcon Controller
If you are using NegCon controller, then the controls are as
follows:
Directional Pad - Move around screen.
Button II or B - Cancel Selection or return to the previous menu.
Button I or A or Start - Confirm Selection.
Negcon Default Driving Controls
Up/Down - Shift Up/Down a gear.
Start - Pause menu.
Twist Anti-Clockwise/Clockwise - Turn Left/Right.
II Button - Brake.
B Button - Change your view.
I Button - Accelerate.
Pause
Pressing Start during a race brings up the pause menu. From top
down the choices are:"CANCEL", To continue racing, "RESTART", to start
the race from the beginning, or "EXIT" to return to the main menu
screen.
Hint
You can control the car better at high speed if you master skidding
around corners. Before you start to turn, take your finger off the
accelerate button and hit the brake for a moment. Return to the
accelerator again while holding down left or right, and the back of the
car should begin to drift out.

Course Select
You begin with a choice of four races. Use left and right to select
which one you want. When you win a race it is recorded here. Once you
have won all four races you then get to try them all in the reverse
direction. The T.T. Race is a time trial against the car #2(or car #3
if your driving the yellow solvalou).

Transmission
Use left and right to choose between automatic transmission(AT),and
manual transmission(MT).
Car Select
Use left and right to choose between the cars available. Each car
has a performance profile diagram based upon four parameters:
Acceleration

Maximum Speed
Sound Select
Use left and right to choose between the six music tracks, or
"Random Play" (Track 0).
Options
There are three options here:
Fastest Laps - The top six ranking for the time trial is displayed
here, among with the initials of each driver, and the car used. The
overall best lap time is shown at the bottom. Select"EXIT" to return to
the main menu screen, "LOAD" to load in a saved game, or "SAVE" to save
your current game these last two operations can only be performed if you
have a memory card(see the section on saving and loading a game).
Button Config - Use left and right here to choose your preferred
button configuration for your controller. The labelling is as follows:

Accelerate - Accelerate
Brake - Brake
Shift Up - Shift Up a gear
Shift Down - Shift Down a gear
Change View - Change View
Adjust Mode - Calibrating your neGcon
If you are using a neGcon you can press start on the "Button Config"
screen to adjust the analogue controls:
Firstly, press start with the neGcon straight to set the central
rest postion. Next, adjust the width of the central' no turn' region
(The margin around the central rest postion throughout which the car
drives straight) then press start again. Finally adjust the full lock
position (This is the distance that the controller must be twisted
through to peform the tightest turn) and press start to confirm.
Music Player - This option lets you listen to the background music
while watching a racing demo.
Saving and Loading a game
If you have a memory card then you can save your current game along
with your best times, and load them back in later. From the main menu
screen select "Option" then "Fastest Laps" and then either "Load" to
load a game or "Save" to save a game.
Saving: Select "New file" to create a new saved game, or selcet a
previous saved game if you want to save over it, and then confirm. If
there is no available space left on your memory card then the message
"Card is Full" appears. Press {} or square to exit.
Loading: Select a saved game (These are indexed by the best race
time in each) and then confirm. Press {} or square to exit.
